Apalachicola National Forest Backcountry Circuit

Florida's wildest sand roads through bear country.

Moderate

The Apalachicola National Forest hides Florida’s wildest backcountry — 632,000 acres of longleaf pine, cypress swamps, and sandy two-tracks that’ll test your recovery gear. This circuit connects Forest Service roads through the Bradwell Bay and Sopchoppy River wilderness areas, where black bears still rule and cell towers fear to tread. The crux comes at Sopchoppy River crossing during high water — scout it first or you’ll be winching out of tannin-dark current.

Bring a winch, tow straps, and aired-down tires for the sugar sand stretches that swallow street tires whole. Stock 4WD trucks can handle dry conditions, but spring rains turn innocent-looking puddles into axle-deep bog holes. Hunt season (November-January) brings orange-clad crowds, so stick to summer or early fall. You’ll earn solitude that’s rare in Florida — miles of forest road where the only sounds are wind through pine needles and your engine working hard.
