Matagorda Island State Park Beach Drive
Pristine barrier island beach driving
Matagorda Island stretches 38 miles along the Texas Gulf Coast, accessible only by private ferry from Port O’Connor. The beach drive runs the entire length of the island on hard-packed sand, passing through ghost towns, abandoned military structures, and untouched coastal prairie. This is one of the last undeveloped barrier islands on the Texas coast, where wild horses roam free and redfish cruise the surf just yards from your campsite. The north end holds remnants of Camp Hulen, a WWII bombing range where concrete targets still dot the dunes.
Beach driving requires proper tire pressure and understanding of tide schedules—low tide offers the firmest sand. Stock 4WD vehicles handle it fine with aired-down tires, though high-clearance helps in softer sections. The ferry runs on weekends only, limiting access but ensuring solitude. Pack everything you need including water, fuel, and food. Spring and fall offer the best weather, though fishing is productive year-round. This is Texas coast overlanding at its purest—no crowds, no development, just endless beach and Gulf horizon.
