Baja California Sur — East Cape Arroyo San Bartolo Dispersed Camp
Arroyo San Bartolo is a well-known landmark on the East Cape corridor south of Los Barriles — a rare permanent freshwater drainage lined with fan palms and fig trees cutting through the Baja Sur desert. Overlanders running the transpeninsular route south toward Cabo Pulmo have been parking rigs on the sandy arroyo flats above the village for decades. It’s shaded, protected from wind, and has that classic Baja arroyo vibe: dead quiet, birdsong, the smell of palms and dust. No facilities, no fee, no sign. Camp on the flat gravel benches above the seasonal flow.
Access is off Mexico Highway 1 near Km 128, just north of the village of San Bartolo. Any high-clearance vehicle handles it fine in dry conditions — the arroyo crossing itself can get soft after rain. Best season is October through April; summer heat in this canyon is brutal. Water in the arroyo is not potable without treatment. No cell signal reliably. Fire restrictions apply during dry season — dig a pit or use a stove.
