Tsauchab River Gorge — Naukluft Plateau Southern Rim Viewpoint
The Tsauchab River carves a dramatic exit point from the Naukluft Plateau, slicing through folded quartzite and limestone before spilling south toward Sesriem and Sossusvlei. From the rim above the gorge, you’re looking at the full vertical drop of the plateau’s southern escarpment — hard desert geology laid bare. This is the natural endpoint of the Büllsport to Tsauchab traverse and one of the few places where you can physically see both the high plateau spine and the Namib basin floor stretching west. No facilities, no signage — just raw Namibian desert at its most uncompromising.
Access from the Sesriem side is via the Namib-Naukluft National Park boundary — a valid NamibRand or NWR permit is required. The 4×4 track off the plateau becomes extremely rocky in the final descent. Best visited dry season (May–September); the limestone shelves turn treacherous when wet. This is permit territory — sort it in Windhoek or Sesriem before you roll in.
