Gila National Forest — Middle Fork Gila River Corridor Dispersed Camp
This is the Gila you came for. Dispersed camping is permitted throughout the Middle Fork corridor of the Gila National Forest — no designated sites, no fee, just you picking a flat spot among the cottonwoods and canyon willows along the river. The terrain is classic New Mexico high desert canyon: red rock walls, ponderosa pine ridgelines, and the Middle Fork cutting cold and clear through it all. Expect solitude on weekdays; holiday weekends pull more traffic but it never gets crowded by national forest standards. Fire restrictions vary seasonally and can be strict late spring through summer — check the Gila NF website before you go.
Access is primarily via NM-15 south of Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument, or via the Upper Gila corridor from Silver City. The road surface ranges from gravel to rough dirt depending on how deep you push. High-clearance recommended; 4WD advisable after rain. River crossings can run high in spring — scout before committing. Stay limit is 14 days. No trash service; pack it out.
Canyon walls, cold river, zero crowds.
