Trans-America Trail — Telluride to Moab via Paradox Valley and Gateway (Colorado–Utah Canyon Connector)

San Juan high country to canyon desert on pure dirt.

Moderate

This segment of Sam Correro’s Trans-America Trail links the high-altitude San Juan Mountains to the canyon country of eastern Utah by threading through one of Colorado’s least-visited valleys. Leaving Telluride via Norwood and the Divide Road, the route descends into Paradox Valley — named because the Dolores River runs directly across it rather than along it, a geological oddity worth stopping to understand. The valley floor is salt and sage, flanked by red mesa walls, with almost no services. From there the trail picks up the Dolores River corridor through Gateway (the only fuel), crosses into Utah near Castleton, and drops into Moab via the La Sal Mountain backdoor on dirt — avoiding the pavement of US-191 almost entirely.

This is a genuine dirt and gravel overland connector, not a rock crawl. A stock 4WD with decent clearance handles it in dry conditions. After spring snowmelt or monsoon rains, sections of the Paradox Valley floor and the Gateway approach become greasy clay — plan accordingly. Best window is May through June and September through October. Fuel at Gateway is your only resupply between Telluride and Moab; carry extra. Cell service is essentially nonexistent through Paradox Valley. What this stretch gives you is the Colorado most people never see — remote, geologically violent, and completely underdeveloped.

Frequently asked questions

Can a stock 4Runner or Wrangler handle this route without a lift?

Yes. Stock 4WD high-clearance rigs like a 4Runner, Wrangler, or Tacoma are the minimum and will manage the full 148 miles without issues in dry conditions. Aired-down tires help on the loose gravel and shelf road sections dropping toward Paradox Valley.

When does snow close the high-country sections near Telluride?

The upper USFS segments above 9,000 feet can hold snow into late May and see early storms by mid-October. Best windows are late May through June and September through early October — avoid July and August if you hate afternoon thunderstorms turning dirt to grease.

Do you need a permit to run this route or camp along it?

No permit required for the route itself. Dispersed camping on BLM land in the Paradox Valley and Gateway corridor follows the standard 14-day stay limit — no fee, no reservation. USFS sections near Telluride fall under Uncompahgre NF rules, same deal.

What's the hardest section and what makes it sketchy?

The shelf road descent off the plateau into Paradox Valley is the sharpest moment on the route — narrow, loose surface, and a serious drop on the exposure side. It's not a technical rock crawl, but a blown tire or overcorrection on that section has real consequences. Drive it slow and check your brakes before you drop.

How far is the nearest gas from Gateway, and can I do this in one fuel load?

Gateway has no fuel — nearest reliable gas is Naturita to the east or Moab at the end of the route. The full 148-mile run plus approach miles means you need at minimum a 30-gallon range to be comfortable; top off in Telluride before you leave and again in Moab when you arrive.
