Comanche Bluff Road
Hill Country's most technical limestone challenge
Comanche Bluff Road earns its reputation as one of the Hill Country’s most technical drives, threading through private ranch gates and limestone outcroppings between Comfort and Hunt. The route follows old ranching roads that climb steep bluffs overlooking the Guadalupe River valley, with several mandatory creek crossings that can run knee-deep after spring rains. The infamous Devil’s Staircase—a series of natural limestone ledges—sits about halfway through and separates the weekend warriors from the serious rock crawlers.
This is expert-level terrain that demands full skid plates, low-range gearing, and preferably a winch. Stock vehicles will get body damage or worse on the technical sections. Access requires permission from multiple landowners, and conditions change seasonally—spring floods make crossings dangerous, while summer heat can be oppressive. When passable, you’ll experience some of Texas’s most challenging technical driving through gorgeous Hill Country landscape that few people ever see.
