Estancia Monte Dinero — Cabo Vírgenes Lighthouse and Magellan Strait Viewpoint

Point of Interest

Cabo Vírgenes sits at the raw edge of Argentina — the continent’s southernmost tip before the Strait of Magellan swallows everything into grey water and wind. The 1904 lighthouse still operates, and the estancia grounds hold one of the largest Magellanic penguin colonies in Patagonia, with over 100,000 birds nesting here from September through April. The steppe wind here is relentless and legitimate — not a talking point, an actual physical force. Plan accordingly.

Access is via a signed gravel road off Ruta 3, roughly 130 km southeast of Río Gallegos. High-clearance 2WD handles the track in dry conditions; soft shoulders after rain. The reserve is managed jointly by the provincial government and the estancia family. Small entry fee applies at the gate. No fuel. Cell signal is nonexistent. Worth every kilometer of washboard to stand at the edge of the continent.

Edge of the continent. Penguins and Magellan wind.
