Skagway Recreation Area Campground — Dyea Road
Sitting about nine miles from downtown Skagway on the gravel Dyea Road, this National Park Service campground is the closest established camp to the White Pass and Yukon Route corridor on the Alaska side. It’s a flat, open site in the river valley with spruce framing the edges, fire rings, and vault toilets. The Chilkoot Trailhead is steps away. No hookups, no showers — just good air and the sound of the Taiya River. Popular with Chilkoot backpackers in July and August, but overlanders rolling off White Pass or staging for a Skagway start will find it uncrowded most shoulder-season mornings.
Dyea Road is well-maintained gravel — passable by any capable 2WD rig but check after heavy rain. The road dead-ends at the trailhead. No reservations required for vehicle camping. Bear-safe food storage is expected; canisters available at the Skagway NPS office in town. Season roughly May through September depending on snowpack.
