Prelude Lake Territorial Campground — Northwest Territories Barren Lands Gateway
Prelude Lake sits about 30 km east of Yellowknife on Highway 4, making it the last legit established campground before the barrens swallow everything north of Tibbit Lake. Forested sites right on the lakeshore, pit toilets, fire rings, and potable water when the facilities are staffed. The vibe is quiet Canadian Shield — granite outcrops, black spruce, and the kind of flat northern light that makes you want to stay longer than planned. It’s a solid pre-run shakedown night and a place to sort your kit before the ice road begins in earnest.
Season runs roughly mid-May through early September. Roads in are paved all the way — no drama getting here. Cell service is marginal to none past the city boundary. Run by the GNWT Department of Environment and Natural Resources. Expect it relatively quiet outside of summer long weekends.
Last trees before the barrens swallow you.
