Skeleton Coast Park — Uniab River Mouth Coastal Dispersed Camp
The Uniab River is one of the few ephemeral rivers that actually pushes through the Namib gravel plains to reach the ocean inside Skeleton Coast National Park. The camp area sits on the open flats near the river mouth — no facilities, no shade, just fog, wind, seal stench from nearby colonies, and the absolute end-of-the-world silence you came here for. Springbok, brown hyena, and the occasional desert-adapted lion have been recorded in this corridor. You are deep inside a restricted national park concession zone — this is not casual dispersed camping in the BLM sense. Access requires a valid NWR Skeleton Coast park permit and you must be out before the gate times stipulate.
The track from the C34 coastal road toward the Uniab is sandy and corrugated — 4WD with aired-down tyres is non-negotiable. The Benguela fog rolls in hard most mornings, dropping visibility to near zero; plan accordingly. Confirm current permit requirements with NWR Windhoek before departure, as Skeleton Coast park regulations change and self-camping permissions in the south zone are tightly controlled.
Desert river meets the Atlantic — permits required.
