Pedernales River Ranch Road Network

Private ranch roads that open to the public during hunting seasons wind through classic Texas Hill Country along the Pedernales River. The route follows old cattle trails across limestone shelves and through cedar breaks, with the highlight being Johnson Fork crossing where the river cuts through solid bedrock. During dry spells you’ll navigate exposed limestone ledges; after rains, expect flowing water and potential flash flood conditions.

Easy to moderate difficulty depending on water levels and seasonal conditions. Stock high-clearance vehicles handle most conditions, but 4WD helps in wet weather when clay turns to grease. Access requires permission from participating landowners—check with Texas Parks and Wildlife for current access agreements. Best time is fall through spring when temperatures are mild and wildflowers bloom. Multiple primitive camping spots along the river offer excellent star-gazing and a chance to hear the coyotes sing at dawn.
