Epupa Falls Camp — Kunene River Gorge Campground

Epupa Falls Camp sits right on the banks of the Kunene River where the water drops in a series of thundering cascades draped in makalani palms. It’s a proper established camp with basic ablutions, shaded sites, and direct views of the falls — a genuinely wild setting that earns its place as the end-of-trail anchor for anyone running the Kaokoland Traverse from Opuwo. The camp is run through communal conservancy arrangements and sees a mix of overlanders arriving via the rough track from the north and the river route from Okongwati. Capacity is limited, especially in peak Namibian dry season (June–September) when it fills fast.

The road in from Opuwo is remote, corrugated dirt with soft sand sections near the river — 4WD mandatory, high-clearance required. No fuel at Epupa; last reliable fill is Opuwo. Carry extra water and provisions. River swimming is possible but croc awareness is non-negotiable. Verify current pricing and availability through the Himba conservancy office in Opuwo before departure.
