Sierra Juárez — Laguna Hanson Dispersed Camp

Dispersed Camping

Laguna Hanson sits inside Parque Nacional Constitución de 1857, a legitimate pine-and-oak forest that most people flying down the Transpeninsular never know exists. The lake itself is seasonal — bone dry in late summer drought years, shallow and reflective in winter and spring — but the dispersed sites scattered among the granite boulders and Jeffrey pines are solid regardless. Fires are common here at night even in May. Bring your own water. No developed facilities worth mentioning. Light use mid-week; Mexican families pack it on holiday weekends.

Access is via the dirt road off MEX 3 east of Ensenada, roughly 50 miles south of Tecate. The road is rough graded dirt, manageable in a high-clearance 2WD in dry conditions but slick as grease after rain. The park charges a nominal entrance fee collected by a ranger when one’s present — not always. Stay limit not formally enforced but respect the 14-day standard. Best season is October through June; summer lightning storms roll through fast.
