Cueva de las Manos — Upper Pinturas River Canyon Viewpoint

The Cueva de las Manos sits inside the Río Pinturas canyon, a dramatic slot in the Patagonian steppe that you’d never know was there until you’re standing at the rim looking down at ochre and charcoal-painted walls. The cave entrance faces northeast and catches morning light perfectly — that’s when the hand stencils, hunting scenes, and geometric shapes glow. UNESCO World Heritage since 1999. The walk down from the canyon rim to the cave mouth is short but steep, on maintained trail. Small visitor center at the top collects the entrance fee.

Access is off Ruta Provincial 43 via a signed gravel spur, roughly 100 km south of Perito Moreno. A standard high-clearance 2WD handles it fine in dry conditions. The canyon road can get greasy after rain. Open year-round but winter (June–August) access can be restricted by snow and ice — confirm locally. Cell signal is essentially zero out here.
