Ruta 41 — Lago Cochrane Valley Floor Dispersed Camp

Dispersed Camping

This stretch of Ruta Nacional 41 between Cochrane and the Argentine border at Paso Roballos runs through open Patagonian steppe and lenga beech forest with the Río Cochrane draining glacial meltwater nearby. Overlanders running the northern Ice Fields plateau crossing pull off on flat gravel benches well back from the road — no services, no signs, just wind, condors overhead, and that bone-deep Patagonian quiet. Vehicle capacity is whatever fits on the bench you find. No fees, no registration.

Access is straightforward on gravel but deteriorates significantly after rain — Ruta 41 is notorious for sticky clay sections that will swallow a rig in wet conditions. Season runs October through April; outside that window snow can close the pass entirely. Fill water in Cochrane before heading out — sources along the route are unimproved. Nearest fuel is Cochrane, roughly 60–80 km west depending on your camp spot.

Raw Patagonian steppe, gravel flats, zero services.
