Everglades Tamiami Trail Backcountry Loop
Original Tamiami Trail through the River of Grass.
Before Interstate 75 carved through the Everglades, the Tamiami Trail was Florida’s spine — and sections of the original 1928 roadbed still snake through sawgrass where panthers hunt and pythons rule. This loop uses old Tamiami segments, hunting camp roads, and Water Management District levees to penetrate the River of Grass like few tourists ever see. The abandoned Nike missile site at HM-69 marks your deepest penetration into genuine wilderness, where the horizon disappears into endless marsh.
High-clearance 4WD essential for the rough limestone sections and seasonal flooding that turns roads into creeks. Dry season (December-April) offers the best conditions and wildlife viewing when gators concentrate in shrinking ponds. Bring all water, fuel, and supplies — services are 50+ miles away and cell coverage is non-existent. You’ll experience the Everglades as the Seminole knew it: vast, intimidating, and utterly wild.
