Kissimmee Prairie Loop
Cowboy country under Florida's darkest skies
The Kissimmee Prairie Loop follows ranch roads and fire breaks across 54,000 acres of Florida’s last remaining dry prairie, where cowboys still drive cattle like they did 150 years ago. This network of grass and sand roads weaves through palmetto scrub and oak hammocks, past artesian wells and windmill ruins that mark old homesteads. The main loop connects several backcountry camping areas, including the Dark Sky camping zone where light pollution laws protect some of the best stargazing east of the Mississippi.
Easy to moderate difficulty on most sections, though deep sand can trap 2WD vehicles after heavy rains. Stock high-clearance vehicles handle it fine in dry conditions, but 4WD recommended during summer wet season. Day-use fee required, camping permits available. Best from October through March when humidity drops and bugs disappear. This is genuine Florida frontier country — bring water, fuel up in town, and expect to share the trail with working cowboys and wild hogs.
