Steel Creek Loop
Yukon mining country creek crossings and ghost camps
Steel Creek cuts through some of the Yukon’s most remote mining country, where rusted dredge equipment still sits abandoned in creek beds sixty miles northwest of Dawson City. The 28-mile loop follows old mining roads through the Indian River drainage, crossing Steel Creek multiple times and passing through the ghost camp of Granville. Winter ice roads become summer mud bogs, and the crossing at Dominion Creek can turn nasty after rain.
This is moderate 4×4 territory requiring high clearance and recovery gear — chains or winch recommended for the creek crossings. Best tackled June through September when water levels drop, though mosquitoes are biblical in July. No cell service, no facilities, just you and the endless Yukon bush. Plan two days minimum with camping gear, extra fuel, and respect for the territory’s unforgiving remoteness.
