Grave Creek Road to Bear Camp — Rogue River-Siskiyou High Divide via Galice Ridge

Bear Camp Road earned a grim reputation when a family got stranded here in a winter storm in 2006 — a tragedy that put this obscure southwestern Oregon mountain route on maps it never asked to be on. In summer and early fall, though, it’s a legitimately excellent high-clearance drive through old-growth Douglas fir and Port Orford cedar, riding the ridgeline above the Rogue River canyon with distant views of the Siskiyou crest. The route climbs from the Galice-area trailheads above Grants Pass, runs the ridge past the Bald Mountain lookout site, and drops toward the Bear Camp summit at just under 4,500 feet before descending toward Agness and the wild lower Rogue. The road is maintained by Josephine County and the USFS, but maintenance is inconsistent — fallen trees, washouts, and soft shoulders are all legitimate concerns.

This road is genuinely dangerous in wet or icy conditions — don’t let summer-weight trip reports lull you into complacency. High-clearance is required; 4WD is strongly recommended given the grades and surface conditions late in the season. GPS coverage is decent at the summit but drops hard in the canyon approaches. Cell service is essentially nonexistent for the entire crossing. Fuel up in Grants Pass before you go — there is nothing between Galice and Agness. Best run June through early October. Dispersed camping available on USFS land along the upper ridge.
