Windjana Gorge Campground
Windjana Gorge National Park sits deep in the West Kimberley, carved through the Napier Range — a fossilised reef from 350 million years ago. The campground is basic but iconic: vault toilets, cold showers, and a generator-hours power point for those who need it. Expect to share the gorge walk with freshwater crocs sunning on the banks — they’re everywhere and they’re not shy. Peak season (May–August) fills fast; book ahead through the DBCA or you’re turning around.
Access is via the Gibb River Road, mostly corrugated dirt. Most rigs with decent clearance make it fine, but a high-clearance 4WD is strongly recommended after rain. No fuel here — stock up in Fitzroy Crossing or Derby before you roll in. Flies are relentless from September onward.
