Trans-America Trail – Arkansas Section
TAT through the heart of Ozark country
Arkansas marks a dramatic shift on the Trans-America Trail as it leaves the Great Plains and plunges into the forested hills of the Ozarks and Ouachitas. This 200-mile section follows old logging roads, Civil War-era military routes, and Depression-era CCC trails through some of the most underrated wilderness in the South. The route crosses the Buffalo National River, climbs through the Ozark National Forest near Russellville, then tackles the technical rock sections of the Ouachita Mountains where limestone ledges and creek crossings separate casual tourists from serious trail riders.
Moderate difficulty with occasional technical rock crawling sections that demand 4WD low range and good ground clearance. Stock Jeep Wrangler or Toyota 4Runner handles it fine, but underbody protection recommended for the sharp Arkansas limestone. Best run March through November when creek levels are manageable. Summer brings dense foliage that scratches paint and reduces visibility on narrow tracks. Dispersed camping allowed in national forest areas with proper fire precautions. Expect mud after rain and pack recovery gear — Arkansas clay sticks like concrete when wet.
