Sawmill Road to Gray Butte — Crooked River High Desert Plateau via Post and Paulina
Juniper flats, rimrock, and Oregon silence.
Out of Prineville, head south on US-26 and cut onto the BLM network east of Ochoco Reservoir, working through the juniper-sagebrush plateau toward the community of Post and then southeast toward Gray Butte — a prominent volcanic landmark rising above the Crooked River basin at around 5,100 feet. The route crosses several tributary drainages of the Crooked River, passes through stock fence gates that require opening and closing, and eventually delivers you to Gray Butte’s flanks with sweeping views west toward the Cascades on clear days. The road surface shifts from compacted gravel to rutted two-track to soft volcanic ash depending on the section and season.
Most of this route is manageable for a stock 4WD with high clearance in dry conditions, but the ash-based soil sections north of Paulina turn into deep, slippery mud with any moisture — don’t gamble it. Lockers or at minimum a locking rear diff are worth having in spring. Best season is late June through October. No permits required on BLM land. Fuel in Prineville; nothing in Post. Water must be packed in. Cell service disappears fast once you’re off US-26. This is quiet, overlooked Oregon desert — the kind of country where you might not see another rig all day.
