La Macarena Backcountry Route

The La Macarena route penetrates Colombia’s former no-go zone, now a recovering wilderness where FARC camps became eco-lodges and coca fields turned back to jungle. This 180-kilometer track from Villavicencio to La Macarena town crosses ranch country and enters the Serranía de la Macarena, an isolated mountain range older than the Andes. The payoff is access to Caño Cristales, the rainbow river where endemic plants turn the water red, yellow, and green between July and November.

Moderate difficulty with sections of technical terrain in the serranía. Stock high-clearance 4WD handles most of it, but bring recovery gear for rainy season mud. Military escort may be required for some sections — check current security status in Villavicencio. Best visited July through November when river colors peak and roads are most passable. No camping in the national park itself, but plenty of options on approach routes. What you get is Colombia’s ecological crown jewel, a place where peace dividend means overlanders can finally see one of South America’s most unique natural phenomena.
