Cordillera de Vilcabamba Lost City Circuit
Remote access to the real lost city of the Incas
The Vilcabamba Circuit penetrates Peru’s most remote cloud forest to reach Espíritu Pampa, the actual “lost city of the Incas” where Manco Inca made his final stand against Spanish conquest. This 240-mile loop starts from Huancacalle, climbs over 15,000-foot Choquetacarpo Pass, then descends through primary cloud forest where spectacled bears still roam. The final 30 miles to Espíritu Pampa follow barely-visible Inca stone pathways that archaeologists Hiram Bingham and Gene Savoy used to reach the ruins.
Difficult rating demands serious 4WD preparation — high ground clearance, skid plates, recovery gear mandatory. Dry season only (May-September); cloud forest sections stay muddy year-round. Permits required from National Culture Institute in Cusco, plus local guide from Huancacalle village. Carry fuel for 400 miles and water purification tablets. The reward: standing in authentic Inca ruins that maybe fifty people per year visit, surrounded by cloud forest that hasn’t changed since conquistadors rode these same trails five centuries ago.
