Sierra de Órganos Spire Challenge Circuit
Mexico's answer to Moab with more teeth
These volcanic spires rise like cathedral organs from the high desert floor, giving the Sierra de Órganos its name and reputation among Mexico’s most challenging rock crawlers. The 95-kilometer circuit winds through a maze of rhyolite formations, narrow slot canyons, and hidden valleys where Pancho Villa’s revolutionaries once hid from federal troops. The crux comes at Cañón del Diablo where you’ll thread between towering rock walls with barely clearance for mirrors, then tackle a series of boulder gardens that separate the pretenders from the pros.
Expert-level technical challenge requiring full protection, recovery gear, and serious rock crawling experience. Articulation and precise wheel placement crucial — many obstacles have no bypass. Best attempted October through April when desert heat won’t kill you. No water sources, no cell service, and the nearest help is 80 kilometers away in Sombrerete. Come self-sufficient or don’t come at all. This is Mexico’s answer to Moab, but with more teeth and fewer tourists.
