Sand Hills State Forest Fire Tower Road Network
Sand ridge fire roads through Carolina longleaf country
The Sand Hills State Forest Fire Tower Road Network cuts through 46,000 acres of longleaf pine savanna and turkey oak ridges in Chesterfield County, where ancient ocean sand dunes create challenging terrain for 4x4s. The main circuit follows Forest Road 193 to the historic CCC fire tower, then loops through technical sand washes and creek bottoms via Forest Road 201 and the infamous “Washout Crossing” at Little Fork Creek. Sand traps and rutted clay sections test traction control, while the fire tower climb rewards drivers with panoramic views across the Carolina Sandhills.
This moderate to difficult route demands high-clearance 4WD with recovery gear — sand ladders recommended for the deeper washes. Best tackled in fall and winter when sand firms up and water levels drop. No permits required, but respect hunting seasons and gate closures. Dispersed camping allowed at designated spots along the ridges. It’s pure South Carolina backcountry — the kind of place where you’ll see more wild turkeys than people and remember why they call it the Sand Hills.
