Nuuk to Narsarsuaq Viking Route

Viking archaeology meets Arctic overlanding

Difficult

This legendary route traces the footsteps of Norse settlers from Greenland’s modern capital to the ruins of Brattahlid, where Erik the Red established the first Viking colony in 985 AD. The 480-kilometer gravel road winds through the Tunulliarfik Fjord region, past abandoned Cold War radar stations and Inuit hunting camps, with the Narsarsuaq airfield marking your destination. Key waypoints include the Igaliku ruins and the treacherous Tunulliarfik River crossing at low tide.

This is serious Arctic overlanding requiring expedition preparation and self-recovery gear. Stock vehicles won’t cut it — you need aggressive tires, skid plates, and backup fuel for the 16-hour drive. June through August offers the only viable weather window, with river crossings passable at low tide. No permits needed, but fuel stops are non-existent between settlements. What you get is raw Greenlandic wilderness and legitimate Viking archaeology most overlanders will never see.
