The Carretera Austral cuts through Chile’s most remote wilderness like a gravel ribbon thrown across Patagonia’s spine. This 1,240-kilometer ribbon of dirt and stone runs from Puerto Montt to Villa O’Higgins, crossing countless rivers, skirting glacial lakes, and threading between ice-capped peaks. The route demands multiple ferry crossings including the notorious Barcaza at Puerto Yungay, where weather can strand you for days while Andean winds howl across Lago O’Higgins.

Don’t let the ‘highway’ designation fool you — this is serious overlanding territory with washboard sections that’ll rattle your fillings loose and river crossings that rise without warning. High-clearance 4WD isn’t mandatory but smart, especially for the detours to places like Marble Caves or Laguna San Rafael. Fuel every chance you get, carry extra water, and plan for 7-10 days minimum. Best tackled December through March when ferries run regularly. What you get is access to some of the most pristine wilderness left on this continent, where condors outnumber people and the silence is so complete it rings in your ears.
