Cabo Rojo Salt Flats to Playa Sucia Lighthouse Trail

Salt flats to lighthouse on dramatic sea cliffs

Easy

This coastal route cuts across the otherworldly landscape of Cabo Rojo’s active salt flats, where pink-tinged evaporation ponds stretch toward the Caribbean horizon. The track begins near the commercial salt operations and follows maintenance roads through the flats before climbing onto the limestone headlands that guard Puerto Rico’s southwest corner. Los Morrillos Lighthouse, built by the Spanish in 1882, sits perched on 200-foot cliffs above Playa Sucia, offering commanding views toward the Mona Passage and Dominican Republic on clear days.

Easy to moderate depending on recent weather—the salt flat sections can turn sloppy after rain, requiring 4WD traction. High-clearance vehicles recommended for the rocky limestone sections near the lighthouse. The route is fully exposed with no shade, so early morning or late afternoon drives work best. Bring water and sun protection as there are no services once you leave the main roads. The payoff is spectacular coastal scenery and some of the best sunset views in the Caribbean, plus excellent opportunities for bird watching in the salt ponds.
