Volcán Ojos del Salado — World’s Highest Active Volcano Summit Viewpoint
Ojos del Salado is the centrepiece of the Ruta de los Seismiles and the highest volcano on Earth — a brutal, beautiful mass of snow, sulphur, and rock straddling the Argentine-Chilean border above 6,800m. From the Argentine approach via Fiambalá and the Paso San Francisco corridor, overlanders reach a base camp near the refugio at roughly 5,200m before the technical summit push begins. The mountain’s crater lake — the world’s highest — is a surreal sight even from vehicle-accessible terrain below the snowline. Expect fierce Puna winds, sub-zero nights year-round, and zero cell signal.
The Argentine Army border post at Paso San Francisco requires vehicle registration and permits coordinated through the Catamarca provincial government before entry into the high zone. Access road from Fiambalá is rough dirt and rocky — 4WD and high clearance mandatory. Best window is November through March; outside that, snowpack and extreme cold make the approach genuinely dangerous. Carry fuel for 400+ km with no resupply between Fiambalá and the Chilean altiplano.
World's highest volcano. No crowds. No mercy.
