Laguna Brava Flamingo Colony

This massive salt lake at 4,300 meters elevation transforms into a pink sea when thousands of Chilean, Andean, and James’s flamingos gather to feed. The sight of these birds against the backdrop of snow-capped volcanoes is otherworldly. Best viewing is typically from April through September, though the birds’ presence depends on water levels and food availability. The lake sits in a vast puna landscape that feels like stepping onto another planet.

Reaching Laguna Brava requires serious preparation — it’s a rough 80-kilometer track from Vinchina through high desert terrain. High-clearance 4WD is mandatory, and altitude sickness is a real concern. Bring warm clothes, extra fuel, food, and water. Weather changes fast at this elevation, and there’s zero infrastructure once you leave the main valley.
