Verkhoyansk Weather Station Meteorological Museum
This small but fascinating museum occupies the original 1885 weather station building where temperatures of -67.8°C were recorded. Displays include vintage Soviet weather instruments, telegraphs used to report conditions to Moscow, and survival equipment used by meteorologists during brutal Arctic winters. The curator, usually an elderly Russian woman, speaks broken English and loves sharing stories of extreme weather events.
Located two blocks from Verkhoyansk’s main road, the museum operates sporadically depending on weather and the curator’s availability. A hand-written sign in Cyrillic marks the entrance. Admission is by donation, and visitors often leave canned goods or fuel for the staff. The building itself is a remarkable example of Arctic construction techniques.
