Verkhoyansk Historical Museum
This small but fascinating museum sits in Verkhoyansk, the town that holds unofficial records for the coldest temperatures ever recorded in a permanently inhabited settlement. The museum showcases the extreme weather history, indigenous Sakha culture, and the town’s role as a Siberian exile destination. Outside, a monument marks the famous -67.7°C (-89.9°F) reading from 1892.
The museum operates sporadically and hours depend heavily on staff availability — call ahead if possible. Verkhoyansk itself is accessible only by winter ice roads or small aircraft, making this a true end-of-the-world destination. Summer access requires flying in, as the Verkhoyansky Ridge routes are impassable when the rivers thaw.
