Valley of the Moon Amphitheater La Paz
Valle de la Luna sits in a massive erosional amphitheater carved from multi-colored clay and sandstone formations, creating a lunar-like landscape 15 minutes from downtown La Paz. The geological formations include towering spires, narrow slot canyons, and badland ridges in shades of red, purple, and yellow. Walking trails wind through the formations, leading to viewpoints overlooking the entire valley with La Paz and snow-capped Illimani peak visible in the distance.
Access is via a steep cobblestone road from La Paz that requires careful driving, especially during rainy season when clay surfaces become slippery. The site sits at 3,600 meters elevation, so take altitude into account. Local guides offer tours, but the main trails are well-marked for independent exploration. Afternoon light is spectacular for photography as shadows define the formations.
