Valle de la Luna (Valley of the Moon)

Otherworldly eroded landscape just outside La Paz that looks like you're standing on another planet.

This bizarre moonscape of eroded clay and sandstone spires sits in a protected area about 10 kilometers from La Paz center. The formations look like something from Mars — tall spindly towers, narrow canyons, and ridges carved by wind and rain over millions of years. Walking trails wind through the formations, and the late afternoon light makes the whole place glow gold and red.

Access is via a decent dirt road that any vehicle can handle. Small entrance fee collected at a simple gate. Gets crowded with tour groups mid-day, so hit it early morning or late afternoon for the best experience and photos.

Martian landscape 20 minutes from La Paz.
