Uncompahgre National Forest Engineer Pass West Dispersed Sites
A collection of established dispersed sites scattered across alpine meadows and forest openings on the western approach to Engineer Pass at 11,000+ feet elevation. Sites offer stunning views of the San Juan Mountains’ 13er peaks and access to nearby alpine lakes. Most sites accommodate 1-2 vehicles with level parking areas carved from the mountainside. Fire restrictions in effect during dry conditions, and snow closure typically runs October through June.
Access requires 4WD vehicles due to steep, rocky sections on the final approach. Sites fill quickly during peak summer months when wildflowers bloom. No facilities or water sources — nearest reliable water is Animas Forks ghost town spring 3 miles east. Afternoon thunderstorms are common in summer.
