Ugab River Mouth — Skeleton Coast Fossil Riverbed and Wildlife Crossing
The Ugab River mouth marks the southern boundary of the Skeleton Coast National Park and is one of the most dramatic desert-meets-ocean junctions in Africa. The wide, sandy riverbed cuts through low dunes before disappearing into the Atlantic, and when the morning fog rolls in off the Benguela Current, the whole scene turns otherworldly grey. Desert-adapted elephants, lions, and brown hyena have all been tracked here — this is functional wildlife corridor country, not zoo country. The gate at Ugabmund is the legal entry point for the park; your NWR permit must be sorted before you arrive.
Access is via the C34 coastal road from Henties Bay north. The riverbed itself can be soft sand depending on season and recent flood activity — engage 4WD before you drop in. The gate is unstaffed at certain hours; confirm current hours with NWR Windhoek before departure. Fog is heaviest June through September and can drop visibility to near zero on the coast road.
