Transpantaneira Highway — Porto Jofre Northern Flats Dispersed Camp

At the southern end of the Transpantaneira near Porto Jofre, the road runs through open seasonally flooded savanna where overlanders routinely pull off onto higher ground between the wooden bridges and set up on the roadside verge or adjacent dry campo. This is wild Pantanal at its most concentrated — jabiru storks, giant anteaters, and caimans are your neighbors. No facilities, no signage, no designated spots. You find a patch of firm ground above the flood line and camp. Bring everything you need: water, fuel, food, and serious bug protection.

Access is via the Transpantaneira itself — a single-lane dirt and wooden-bridge road that deteriorates significantly in the wet season (November–March). A high-clearance 4WD is strongly recommended in wet season; some bridges are in rough shape. Dry season (April–October) is when this corridor is passable and wildlife concentrations are at peak. IBAMA/SEMA-MT nominally manage the corridor — no formal permit process exists for roadside camping but respect private fazenda boundaries on either side.
