Telegraph Track — Fruit Bat Falls Creek Flat Dispersed Camp
Pull off Eliot Creek Road and drop into the sandy flats on either side of the crossing below Fruit Bat Falls. This is genuine dispersed camping — no infrastructure, no signage marking it as a campground, just a well-worn patch of sand under paperbarks where Cape Yorkers have been sleeping for decades. The swimming hole at Fruit Bat Falls is a 5-minute walk upstream. It’s shaded, there’s usually a breeze off the creek, and the sandflies will remind you you’re in the tropics. Fills up hard during the dry season peak (June–August) — get here before 3pm or you’re sharing elbow room.
Access is via the Telegraph Track from the south or Bypass Road from the north — both require a capable 4WD. Eliot Creek itself can be a genuine axle-deep crossing after recent rain. No toilets, no water supply aside from the creek. Pack out everything. Fires are generally prohibited in national park zones — check current restrictions with QPWS before you light anything.
