Tamegroute — Koran Library, Green Pottery Workshops, and Draa Palmery Gateway
Tamegroute sits about 22km south of Zagora on the road toward M’Hamid, and it’s one of the few places along the Draa run where you stop the rig, get out, and actually feel the weight of history. The Naciri zaouia here has been a center of Islamic scholarship since the 17th century — the library holds several thousand manuscripts including illuminated Korans on gazelle-skin parchment. The pottery cooperative next door has been firing that unmistakable manganese-green glaze for generations. Small, dusty, real — not built for tourists, even if tourists show up.
Access is straightforward tarmac off the N9. The town is tight — narrow lanes past the palmery aren’t built for wide rigs, so park on the edge and walk in. Best visited morning before the day-trippers from Zagora roll through. Good reference point for overlanders staging a push toward Erg Chegaga — fuel and water still available in Zagora, not reliably here.
700-year-old manuscripts and green pottery.
