Swartberg Nature Reserve — Ou Tol Flats Dispersed Camp
This is the real deal — a permit-required dispersed camp on Cape Nature land inside the Swartberg Nature Reserve, north-facing slopes above the Prince Albert side of the pass. Terrain is open fynbos on shale, wind-exposed, and seriously quiet. No crowds, no amenities, no handholding. You’ll need to self-contain completely — water, waste, everything. The Swartberg range rising above you is one of the most dramatic geological backdrops in the Western Cape. Fire restrictions apply year-round in summer months; confirm with Cape Nature before you light anything.
Access from Prince Albert via the Swartberg Pass gravel road (well-maintained but corrugated in stretches). A high-clearance 4WD is strongly recommended, especially after rain when the road surface turns greasy. Obtain a permit from Cape Nature before arrival — unannounced camping in the reserve draws rangers fast. Cell signal is essentially zero beyond town.
