Baviaanskloof Mega Reserve — Doringkloof River Flat Dispersed Camp
The Baviaanskloof Wilderness Route threads through one of South Africa’s most dramatic gorge systems, and the gravel flats along the Baviaanskloof River offer legitimate dispersed camping for self-sufficient overlanders. Doringkloof sits mid-route, roughly 60 km east of Willowmore, where the valley briefly widens and the riverbed opens onto a firm gravel flat shaded by spekboom and riverine bush. You’re inside the UNESCO World Heritage Site buffer of the Baviaanskloof Mega Reserve — no fire rings, no tables, no ablutions, and no ranger knocking on your door at 6 AM. Bring everything in, take everything out.
The Baviaanskloof main road is a well-maintained gravel track passable by high-clearance 2WD in dry conditions, but after rain the river crossings can catch out low-slung vehicles fast. River levels can rise with zero warning — camp on high ground above the flood line. No cell service through the core gorge. Permits for transit are purchased via Eastern Cape Parks. Best season is April–October; summer heat and flash flood risk are real deterrents.
