Strzelecki Crossing — Cooper Creek Floodplain and Track Junction Viewpoint
This is the crux of the Strzelecki Track. Cooper Creek is one of Australia’s great inland rivers — deceptively wide, braided across a red-clay floodplain fringed with coolibahs and gums. When it’s dry it’s just a sandy crossing, but after rain anywhere in western Queensland the Creek can bank up fast and cut the track for days or weeks. The crossing sits roughly 60 kilometres south of Innamincka, and the floodplain stretches wide enough that you’ll see the horizon in three directions. On a still morning with pelicans working the shallows and wedge-tails overhead, it’s one of the most striking inland scenes in Australia.
Check flood gauge readings at Innamincka before you depart and monitor Bureau of Meteorology alerts for the Lake Eyre Basin. In a wet year this crossing can be impassable for extended periods with zero warning. There’s no bridge, no alternative route, and no recovery crew coming quickly. Carry flood intelligence the same way you’d carry fuel — as a non-negotiable.
Cooper Creek crossing — respect the flood zone.
