Stony Pass

High-altitude 4WD pass connecting the Alpine Loop to Rio Grande National Forest at 12,588 feet.

This rugged pass sits at 12,588 feet, marking the Continental Divide between San Juan and Rio Grande National Forests. The approach from Silverton is a technical rock crawl with loose talus and steep grades that’ll test your rig and your nerves. Views from the top stretch across the Weminuche Wilderness to the east and back toward the San Juan Mountains to the west.

No services up here—just alpine tundra, marmots, and weather that can turn nasty fast. The eastern descent toward Kite Lake is equally technical. Only attempt this in dry conditions with a well-built 4WD. Snow can linger into July.
