Spangmik Village — Pangong Tso Southern-Shore Tented Camps and Homestays
Spangmik is the end-of-the-road settlement on the Indian side of Pangong Tso, and it’s where most overlanders finish the Leh run over Chang La and through Tangtse. It isn’t one campground. It’s a cluster of seasonal tented camps and village homestays strung along the shore, run by local families. Expect canvas tents with beds, shared or attached toilets, and basic meals. Most places will let you park a rig next to the camp, but ask first. Power is limited and the nights are cold even in summer. At roughly 14,000 feet, the altitude hits hard if you came straight up from Leh, so give yourself a night in Leh and don’t rush it.
Access runs Leh to Karu to Chang La to Tangtse to the lake, about 160 km on mostly paved but broken road with water crossings and washouts in the high-melt months. Protected Area permits are required, and you should confirm the current process through the Leh permit office before you roll. Camp rates, availability, and rules change, so verify ahead. The season runs roughly May to September, with the roads and camps shutting down once winter locks in. Have a dirty day.
