Skaftafell Campsite — Vatnajökull National Park
Skaftafell is one of Iceland’s most iconic campgrounds, set in a birch-and-heath pocket under the Vatnajökull ice cap with glacier tongues spilling down the hills around it. It’s a large, open campground with room for tents, campers, and rooftop rigs. Facilities include toilets, showers, and a visitor center with maps and a small café. The park service sells trail maps for walks to Svartifoss and the Skaftafellsjökull viewpoint. It’s busy in summer, and the wind can come in sideways, so bring good stakes and a solid guy-out plan.
Access is easy: it’s right off Route 1 on pavement, so any vehicle can reach it. The real Icelandic F-road country is further inland, but this is a solid staging spot for glacier hikes and the south coast. Summer is the main season, while shoulder months can mean cold, rain, and snow. Check current fees, facility dates, and any weather closures with Vatnajökull National Park before you go. Have a dirty day.
