Salar de Atacama — World’s Third Largest Salt Flat and Flamingo Lagoon Viewpoint
Sitting at roughly 2,300 meters on the Puna de Atacama, the Salar de Atacama covers about 3,000 square kilometers of crystalline salt crust, brine lagoons, and wind-sculpted halite formations. The western lagoons — particularly Laguna Chaxa inside the Reserva Nacional Los Flamencos — hold year-round populations of Chilean, Andean, and James flamingos feeding on brine algae. This is the real deal: no fences, no crowds outside of Chaxa’s visitor zone, and a horizon that turns violent orange at sunset. Pull off the main track south of San Pedro and you’re standing on crust thick enough to walk, surrounded by volcanic cones and nothing else.
Access via Ruta 23 south from San Pedro de Atacama is paved and straightforward — any high-clearance vehicle handles it. Laguna Chaxa charges a small CONAF entry fee and has basic toilets. Overlanders running the Paso Sico circuit pass the salar’s eastern edge; factor in a sunrise stop — it’s worth losing sleep over. Wind picks up aggressively by midday.
