Antofagasta

Salar de Atacama Flamingo Reserve

Point of Interest

This protected section of the world’s third-largest salt flat hosts Chilean, Andean, and James’ flamingos year-round in shallow alkaline pools. The birds filter-feed on algae and brine shrimp that thrive in the harsh 12,000-foot environment. Viewing platforms and raised boardwalks protect the fragile ecosystem while providing excellent photography opportunities of the pink flocks against white salt and distant volcanic peaks.

Access is via a well-maintained gravel road from San Pedro de Atacama, about 35 miles south. Entry requires a park fee and the reserve has specific visiting hours. Bring layers—temperatures can swing 40 degrees between day and night, and afternoon winds can be fierce.
