PTDC Motel Sost — Karakoram Highway Northern Gateway Campground
Sost is the final Pakistani town on the KKH before Khunjerab Pass, and the PTDC Motel here has long been the go-to base for overlanders staging their border crossing. The campground sits adjacent to the motel compound — a bare-bones gravel and dirt lot with access to toilets and a basic canteen. It’s dusty, it’s noisy near the customs yard, and it’s exactly what you need: a known address in a frontier town. Capacity is loose — a handful of rigs can fit without crowding. Customs formalities, money changing, and fuel are all within walking distance.
Access is straightforward via the KKH paved highway. Season runs May through October — the Khunjerab Pass closes to traffic in winter and Sost goes quiet fast. Book ahead during the August peak when caravans stack up at the border. Cell signal is functional in town. Carry cash (Pakistani rupees); card machines are unreliable.
Last camp before the Khunjerab climb.
